The Working Whiskers Barn Cat Program
What is our "Working Whiskers" program? Well, it is a program designed to help cats in our community that are not readily adoptable. This includes at risk cats at our local shelters that are not "social" (e.g. feral or semi feral cats), but that would be wonderful working cats!
A working cat is a cat or group of cats that are strategically placed in a safe location, with shelter (barns, garages, commercial buildings, sheds, nurseries etc.) and typically do the job of natural predation of rodents very effectively. The adopter must be willing and able to provide daily food & water as well as medical care. Do you have a safe place that needs a working cat or cats? If so please contact us to arrange a meeting on how this life saving program works! A bonus is that often these feral cats can become more social once placed, we have lots of stories of once feral kitties that are now highly social with their caregivers. |
How it works...What we do... |
Cats in need of placement are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, tested for disease (FIV/FELV) and given parasite treatment & flea control. They are also "ear tipped" (see photo above of Remy). Ear tipping is a way of identifying these cats for their own safety, it earmarks them (literally) as a feral cat with a caregiver that is already spayed/neutered.
Once you have discussed your setup with us and been approved for a Working Whiskers placement one of our volunteers will bring your cats and set them up. They will remain in a secure location in a hutch enclosure for several weeks to ensure proper acclimation. When cats come to a new location they generally remain on site when properly acclimated, though of course with animals there are no guarantees. Leaving them in the hutch ensures they adapt properly to your property before being released. We setup the hutches and provide care instructions. There is no charge for this program, but donations are greatly appreciated to help ensure the future of our ability to assist these cats in our community!
